Negombo is a city is a city just north of Colombo, Sri Lanka. It is the site of the country's international airport. Because of this many visitors to Sri Lanka leave immediately for other parts of the island or stay briefly at one of Negombo's beach hotels north of the city. However Negombo is worth exploring in its own right. The city has a Dutch heritage, no more evident than in the canals which meander their way through the city and surrounding countryside. Negombo is a lively working port and especially worth visiting is the vibrant fish market where locals can be seen processing and trading the day's catch.
Fishermen weigh the catch.
The fish are sorted into those which will be sold fresh and those which will be dried.
Fish too small to be sold fresh are laid in the sun to dry.
And later, when dried, collected for sale in local shops.
Locals first select their fresh fish from a trader such as this woman.
Or this more enthusiastic trader.
The fish is then taken to be cleaned by another worker.
